Miniature Monday - A Post-Worthy Poster

In our most recent Miniature Monday post we talked about the contents of the Trinity: Battleground box set, including its many tokens and other cardboard components. One thing we didn't mention is that the box also included a fold-out poster. Half of the poster was an enlarged version of the game's box art, for those who wanted to put it up on their wall, while the other half held a quick-start version of the rules to get players into the action right away.

The back side of the poster held the rest of the quick-start rules, sample character stat cards for a pair of Psions and Aberrants, and even a printed battlefield! Players could have an (admittedly short) game of Trinity: Battleground with only a pair of models each and the poster. Intriguingly, the sample characters showed off the versatility of the game's character creation system by using familiar miniatures from the box set to represent wholly different characters. The miniature for Caul Fein was used to represent a new Aberrant named Ermordren, while a Krikquill and Support Squad Avenger miniature became Trask and P. Scroggs, respectively. The one strange inclusion is T. Williams, who has the same name and miniature as the version in the rulebook, but different stats. One of the reasons we chose to give out sample Krikquill and Support Squad Avenger miniatures at the recent Cangames convention is because we knew players could use them as either members of their respective Support Troop units or as separate characters. We'll look at these two characters below, and give you all a first glance at what a Trinity: Battleground stat card looks like. One thing you may notice is that Psions have Psi Powers, as we have mentioned previously, but Aberrant's reality-warping abilities are referred to as "Taint Powers." Although there are differences between the two in the game's lore, we've referred to them all as Psi Powers since they're mechanically identical in the game.

Using a Krikquill Support miniature, Trask was a low-cost, Caste 1 Aberrant. He had the Boil Psi Power, which dealt light damage but ignored the target's armour, and Liquify, which allowed him to destroy terrain his targets might be hiding behind. He kept the Krikquill's  Shooting Spines and gained Claws to deal with enemies who got too close for comfort, though his lack of any defensive Psi Powers or Mutations left him vulnerable. For a Caste 1 Aberrant he had respectable, though not impressive stats, with his 6 Health and 5 Ranged giving him an edge over similarly costed Psions.

Scroggs used the miniature for a member of Support Squad Avenger but added a great deal of versatility as a 2nd Tier Psion. His Contusion Psi Power allowed him to cause a small amount of damage which ignored enemy armour, while Slingshot could be used to throw enemies to the ground or move a target out of (or into) harm's way. Tow was a defensive power, allowing him to apply a small penalty to incoming enemy ranged attacks at the cost of Psi Points. Similar to Trask, he kept his base model's equipment but also added a set of fighting gloves which could cause surprising damage in melee. Although Scroggs wasn't as tough or as accurate in a firefight as his Aberrant counterpart, he was much more dangerous in close combat and had an additional Psi Point. This meant he could use his Psi Powers more frequently and that they were more accurate when he did. The bonuses provided by his Melee and Firearms skills were already included in his stats, and explained why his attack scores were higher than his base stats would indicate.

When the resurrection of Trinity: Battleground is complete and it has been re-released, the digital core box will include the poster we've mentioned, as well as blank unit cards for Aberrants and Psions so players can create their own unique characters. The character creation system included in the rules gives players a wide range of options, whether players want to make new stats for existing models, bring in miniatures from other games, or even convert their own special creations. We look forward to the creativity and imagination players bring to the tabletops all around the world.
